Nutty Apple Crisp

Anna Kipps TeaChef Level 1

The nut flavors in this apple crisp give it a more rich, bold flavor than most apple crisps have. Very delicious!

Ingredients

  • 4-5 large tart apples (Granny Smith work well)
  • 0/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. loose chestnut tea
  • 1/2 c. hot water
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. rum
  • 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 c. chestnut flour (or almond if you can't find chestnut)
  • 1/2 c. quick oats
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts (chestnuts, hazelnuts, or pecans are best)
  • pinch salt
  • 1 stick butter, room temp.

Directions

Brew tea in water and steep 5 min. Strain and allow tea to cool. Measure out 1/4 c.

Preheat oven to 375°F. In a medium baking dish, whisk together 1/2 c. brown sugar, 1/4 c. brewed tea, honey, lemon juice, rum, and 1/2 tsp. cinnamon. Peel and core the apples, then slice thinly. Add the apples to the tea mixture and toss until lightly coated. In a separate bowl, add flours, oats, salt, the remaining sugar, remaining cinnamon, and butter. Mash it all together with a fork or pastry cutter. It should look somewhat crumbly. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples. Bake in the oven for about 40-45 min.
