Gunpowder Baked Beans

A different take on the traditional picnic dish.

  • 1 tbsp. gunpowder tea
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 1 lb. dry great northern beans
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. chopped onion
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 lb. salt pork, diced
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar


Brew tea in boiling water. Steep 5 min., then strain.

Rinse beans well. Cover with cold water and soak overnight. In the morning, drain and rinse beans and put in a crockpot. Add all other ingredients including the strained Gunpowder tea. Add enough water to cover. Cook on low all day. Stir well before serving.

Prep time: 10 min. Soak time: overnight Cook time: 8-10 hours
